The position of the uterus can also play a role in back pain during periods. Some women have a retroverted uterus meaning it tilts backward instead of forward. When the uterus contracts during menstruation it can push against the ligaments nerves in the lower back causing pain.

Endometriosis

Endometriosis a condition in which the tissue lining the uterus grows outside of it is another major cause of back pain during periods. When the displaced endometrial tissue sheds bleeds it can lead to inflammation triggering pain in the lower back abdomen.

Muscle Tension Spasms

Menstrual cramps can cause increased muscle tension in the pelvic region which in turn can lead to back pain. Additionally hormonal changes can contribute to muscle spasms intensifying the discomfort felt in the back area.

Other Contributing Factors

Several other factors can influence back pain during periods. These include:

  • Stress anxiety
  • Poor posture
  • Lack of exercise
  • Previous back injuries
  • Genetic predisposition

Managing Alleviating Back Pain

While it may not be possible to completely eliminate back pain during periods there are ways to manage alleviate the discomfort. These include:

  • Using heat packs or taking warm baths
  • Engaging in gentle exercises like stretching yoga
  • Taking over-the-counter pain medications
  • Practicing good posture
  • Using relaxation techniques to reduce stress
