DIY Guide: How to Make a Face Mask at Home
The coronavirus pandemic has caused a shortage of face masks leaving many people scrambling to find ways to protect themselves. Fortunately it is possible to make your own face mask at home with just a few simple materials. This DIY guide will show you how to make a face mask that is both comfortable effective.
Gather Your Materials
The first step in making a face mask is to gather the necessary materials. You will need a piece of cotton fabric two elastic bands a needle thread scissors. If you don’t have elastic bands you can use hair ties or rubber bands instead.
Cut the Fabric
Once you have all of your materials you can begin to cut the fabric. Cut the fabric into a rectangle that is 9 inches by 6 inches. This size should fit most adults. If you need a smaller size you can adjust the measurements accordingly.
Sew the Elastic Bands
Next you will need to sew the elastic bands onto the fabric. Start by folding the fabric in half lengthwise pinning the elastic bands to the top bottom edges. Sew the elastic bands in place making sure to leave a few inches of fabric between the bands.
Sew the Sides
Once the elastic bands are in place you can sew the sides of the fabric together. Start by folding the fabric in half widthwise pinning the sides together. Sew the sides together making sure to leave a few inches of fabric at the top bottom.
Finish the Mask
The last step is to finish the mask. Turn the mask inside out sew the top bottom edges together. This will create a pocket for a filter if desired. Finally turn the mask right side out you’re done!
